A cell-surface protein with the capacity for binding fibronectin, fibrinogen, collagen and/or laminin, which protein is obtained by culturing, on a suitable medium, one or more bacterial strains with the capacity for binding fibronectin, fibrinogen, collagen and/or laminin, by isolating such a strain, by washing, by breaking down the strain and by purifying the fibronectin-, fibrinogen-, collagen- and/or laminin-binding component. The invention also relates to the production of the cell- surface protein, to the use of the same for prophylactic purposes, and to the prophylactic treatment of humans and animals. In this connection a preferred form of execution is the prophylactic treatment of ruminants against mastitis.
