PURPOSE:To obtain an epoxy alcohol from an unsaturated alcohol in one stage, by preparing the epoxy alcohol from the unsaturated alcohol using a culture of a methane assimilating microorganism as an oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION:An unsaturated alcohol is brought into contact with a culture of a methane assimilating microorganism or an extract thereof containing a methane oxidation system as an oxidizing agent at 0-60 deg.C, preferably 20-50 deg.C to give the aimed epoxy alcohol. Examples of the methane assimilating microorganism include methane assimilating microorganisms belonging to the genuses Methylomonas, Methylosinus and Methylcoccus, etc. Examples of the unsaturated alcohol include compounds expressed by the formula (n is an integer 1-15), and allyl alcohol, (2-propen-1-ol), allylcarbinol, (3-buten-1-ol), 4-pentenl-1-ol, etc. |
