Hydraulic and cutting fluids - contg. glycol, alkanolamine, phosphate-modified condensation product, and boric acid

Dual-purpose hydraulic and cutting fluids comprise (a) 50-70 (pref. 63-69) wt.% of a water-soluble glycol selected from monoalkylene gylcoals of formula HO(CnH2n)OH (where n=2-6) and polyoxyalkylene glycols; (b) 10-25 (pref. 15-20) wt.% of an alkanolamine of formula H3-xN(ROH)x (where R is 2-3C alkylene and x = 1-3); (c) =10 (pref. =6) wt.% boric acid; and (d) 2-25 (pref. 10-15) wt.% of a condensation product obtained by reacting 1.5 mole of a dialkanolamine of formula HN(CmH2mOH)2 (where m=2 or 3) with 1 mole of a 12-18C fatty acid in the presence of 0.03 mole H3PO4 until the fatty acid content of the reaction mixt. is =5.8%. The fluids are esp. suitable for us in hydraulically controlled machine tools; leaks in the hydraulic system do not introduce foreign contaminants into the cutting fluid.
