PURPOSE:To produce a porous glass having excellent alkali resistance, by hydrolyzing Zr and Si alkoxides to form a gel, and heating the resultant solid at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:An Si alkoxide [e.g. Si(OC2H5)4, etc.] is partially hydrolyzed, and mixed with a Zr alkoxide [e.g. Zr(OC3H7)4, etc.] and other metal alkoxides to obtain a uniform composite compound of metal alkoxides. The amount of the Zr alkoxide is selected to give a porous glass having a ZrO2-content of 10-70mol%. The obtained composite compound is further hydrolyzed to form a glass structure, and at the same time, gelatinized to obtain a solid material. The hydrolysis and gelatinization are carried out by adding the alkoxides to a solvent, and stirring the mixture at about room temperature - 70 deg.C. The solid product is heated at about 500-800 deg.C to obtain a porous glass having a pore diameter of several tens Angstrom . |
