The coupling for railway vehicles has a coupling head (1) with a spring-loaded bolt (2) which engages a socket in the coupling head (1') of the adjoining vehicle. The bolt (2) is held in the coupled position by the pawl (3) which is acted on by the spring (5) and engages a corresponding pawl (3'). The coupling is released by applying a load at the point (6) on the pawl (3) which disengages the two pawls and then withdraws the bolt (2) until the tip (8) of the pawl rides over the tip (9) of the locking lever (4) and the pawl is then retained in the uncoupled position.
