This protection relates to starters 1 having an electric motor 3 whose stator poles 4 consist of permanent magnets. To improve resistance to overheating, without any risk of demagnetising the magnets 4, an additional electrical resistor 20 is connected up in series within the supply circuit 10 of the electric motor 3. The additional resistor 20 preferably forms an integral part of the starter 1, in particular by constituting the element for electrical connection between the motor with magnets 3 and a power contact 14 of the electrocontactor 11.
