PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a perfumery component of perfume, in high yield and purity, at a low cost, by using an aldehyde and a 1-halogeno-3-methyl-2-butene as starting compounds, and treating the reaction product with an acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced by (1) reacting the aldehyde of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are same or different lower alkyl or lower alkenyl, or R<1> and R<2> together form the group of formula II; X<1>, X<2> and X<3> are H or lower alkyl; Y<1> and Y<2> are H or together form a single bond) with a 1-halogeno-3-methyl-2-butene at a molar ratio of preferably about 2:1- 1:2 in the presence of a caustic alkali, water and a phase-transfer catalyst, and (2) treating the resultant organic product with an acid preferably at about 20- 80 deg.C. The concentration of the caustic alkali is selected to give an aqueous solution of preferably 15-50wt% concentration. |
