Method of operating a sequence of Wiegand wires as a read/write memory

A sequence of Wiegand wires (5) or magnetically similarly behaving bistable magnetic elements in wire form (referred to hereafter as BMEs) can be used as a read/write memory for a digitised item of information if the BMEs (5) are successively saturated in one of two possible directions corresponding to a predetermined coding specification (writing of the information), and if the thus coded BMEs (5) are successively excited asymmetrically in a magnetic alternating field, the amplitude of which reaches or only slightly exceeds the restoring field strength of the BMEs; the Wiegand pulses occurring as a result can be distinguished by their polarity. The polarity depends on whether the BMEs (5) were north-magnetised or south-magnetised. By detecting the polarity of the Wiegand pulses, the stored information is retrieved (reading of the stored information). <IMAGE>
