The invention relates to a process and to equipment for producing coal briquettes from lignite and bituminous coal, wherein the constituents of both types of coal are mixed, heated and pressed to briquettes and then cooled. The invention is based on the object of providing a process of the type described at the outset, which does not require a binder for briquetting, avoids odour nuisances and, with a very low sulphur content far below the emission regulations, makes it possible to dispense with heating of the mixture before the pressing step. According to the invention, this object is achieved essentially by removing the moisture from the lignite by preliminary pressing, mixing it only after this with the bituminous coal and then pressing this mixture without a binder under high pressure through a pellet matrix, the emerging pellets being heated by frictional forces with partial removal of moisture and then being cooled. <IMAGE>
