In order in a device, which is provided with a plug-in extension tube, for varying the length of the mast or boom of a sailboard to improve the connection between the extension tube and tubes which are to be joined thereto, the extension tube has on the inside at its one end a rotatably mounted elongated locking member which is to be operated from the outside by hand, the circumferential surface of the tube which is to be connected to the extension tube is provided with a throughhole, which serves as latch for the locking member and consists of two mutually opposite boundaries in the shape of circular arcs, and with a cutout which is open towards the throughhole, and the circumferential surface of the tube has a slot which extends from the throughhole up to the end of the tube to which the extension tube is joined, corresponds at least to the width of the locking member, and is situated opposite the cutout.
