The invention relates to a process for collecting and removing the decomposition gases resulting from the dumping of refuse and from the filling of such landfill sites. The refuse is filled by layers onto a drainage system lying at the bottom, and, after filling a layer, shafts are dug out of it which are connected to the drainage system. These shafts are filled with voluminous waste matter and subsequently covered on their top side with a sheet. The decomposition gases collecting in the shafts are removed by a suction system via the drainage system lying at the bottom. In each additional refuse layer, new shafts are dug above the already existing shafts and connected to the lower ones and subsequently filled up and covered over.
