The invention relates to novel liquid-crystalline tercyclohexyl compounds of the formula I <IMAGE> in which R is an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by O, X is -OOCR<1> and R<1> is an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms, to a process for the preparation of these compounds, and to liquid-crystalline phases containing at least one compound of the formula I.
