The invention relates to a cylinder block for a multi-cylinder in-line reciprocating piston engine, especially for an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle, with liquid cooling, a plurality of supporting ribs being provided between outer cylinder block walls (longitudinal and transverse walls) and each of the cylinder jackets integrally cast with the cylinder block, and cooling ducts being formed between the supporting ribs. For reinforcement of the cylinder block in all load directions a longitudinal duct is formed on both sides of the rows of cylinders, the lateral peripheral sections of which partially project from the corresponding cylinder block longitudinal walls and the base sections of which merge into the cylinder jackets.
