A ball socket for a ball joint with a shank and a cavity for receiving a spherical head is of three-part design: it consists of a housing part, a receiving part, axially displaceable therein, for the spherical head and of a spring part supported on the housing part and acting on the receiving part. The inside diameters of the housing part and the outside diameters of the receiving part are matched to one another in such a way that, in a certain position of the receiving part in the housing part, an axial expansion of the latter for the introduction of the spherical head is possible while, in another position (locking position), this is not possible. The spring action ensures that the receiving part remains in the locking position. This ball socket makes possible automatic engagement and automatic locking of the spherical head after introduction into the ball socket without additional tools or additional operations.
