PURPOSE:To attain centralized maintenance without deteriorating the throughput of a network by allowing an exchange station to give a report to a maintenance station and allowing the maintenance station to troubleshoot a faulty location if communication-disable state takes place between exchange stations. CONSTITUTION:If an exchange station 1A is faulty in a packet exchange network where exchange stations 1A, 1B, 1C connected by lines lAB, lBC, lAC are connected respectively to the maintenance station 2 by lines lA, lB, lC, the stations 1B, 1C detect temporary communication disable on the lines lAB, lAC and inform it to the station 2 through the lines lB, lC. The maintenance station 2 receives a fault notice to change the state of the line lA thereby discriminating a fault of the station A or the lines lAB, lAC.
