A hardening layer formed after, the surface of the matrix metal is heated by friction, has high hardness and excellent wear resistance without using hardening agent. The high temperature of matrix and consumption metals bring about their interdiffusion for compounding under the optimum conditions of friction hardfacing process. Matrix metal is copper, consumption metal is aluminum, and the main composition of hardening layer is composed of CuAl2 intermetallic compound. Friction conditions are as follows: (a) friction pressure on the surface of matrix metal is 3 to 5kg/mm2 ; (b) average drift velocity of friction surface of matrix metal is about 3 to 5mm/sec ; and (c) the number of revolutions of consumption metal is 1500 to 1700rpm. Compared with micro Vickers hardness of 50 to 60Hv of Cu matrix, intermetallic layer on the surface of Cu matrix has higher hardness of 450 to 500Hv.
