Aromatic carbonate process comprises contacting a phenol, carbon monoxide, a base, a Gp. VIIIB element (i.e. Ry, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt) and an oxidant having an oxidn. potential greater than that of the Group VIIIB element. The Group VIIIB element is pref. present in ionic form, and is pref. associated with a carbonyl gp. (inoganic) halide, or is coordinated with a ligand which is an arsine, stibine, phosphine, nitrile or halide. The pref. base is a tert. amine. Pref., (part of) the resulting aromatic carbonate is sepd. from the reaction mixt. and (part of) any resulting Gp. VIIIB element, cpd. or complex is sped. from the reaction mixt. and oxidised and recycled. The prods. are used as, or in prodn. of polycarbonates for moulding or forming into films, sheets, fibres, laminates or reinforced plastics.
