Coupled transport process for removing ions (I) from an aq. feed soln. and depositing them in an aq. prod. soln. is as follows: the feed soln. is circulated within the lumens of a no. of hollow fibres (II) (internal dia. is not >100 mils; microporous walls of thickness is not >20 mils) while the pores of the (II) walls are filled with an H2O-immiscible organic liq. which contains a complexing agent (III). The aq. prod. soln. is circulated over the outer sides of (II), while an ion complex is formed between (III) and (I) in the aq. feed soln. By diffusion of the (III) - (I) complex through the organic liq. retained in the (II)-pores the ions (I) are transferred to the aq. prod. soln. and there liberated. In (II), the surfaces of the walls have a greater affinity for the organic liq. than for H2O, and this characteristic and the microporous nature of the pores results in a capillary action which retains the organic liq. in the pores.
|
