PURPOSE:To make the vanishment of color in the early stage unnecessary and to attain color switching by short circuit by using a conjugate polymer as the material of the 1st electrochromic layer and a transition metallic oxide as the material of the 2nd electrochromic layer. CONSTITUTION:The 1st electrochromic layer 3 made of the conjugate polymer and the 2nd electrochromic layer 5 made of the transition metallic oxide are formed on transparent electrodes 2, 2 on transparent substrates 1, 1, and an electrolyte layer 6 is formed by injecting an electrolyte soln. into the space in a cell. For example, a glass substrate having a transparent electrode coated with a poly-p-phenylene film by vapor deposition and a glass substrate having a transparent electrode coated with a WO3 film by vapor deposition are placed opposite to each other, and an electrolyte layer consisting of 1mol/l LiClO4 and a mixture of polypropylene carbonate with 0.2wt% water as a solvent is formed between the substrates to manufacture an EC element. The vanishment of color in the early stage is unnecessary for the EC element because WO3 is in an oxidized state and poly-p-phenylene is in a reduced state in the early stage. Since the oxidation-reduction potentials of the EC substances do not overlap and are independently each other, color can be vanished by short circuit. |
