Process for dyeing exoskeletons with natural dyes using an aqueous solution or dispersion containing a surface-active agent, in two successive steps, the first of which consists in treating the exoskeletons with a dye-free solution A containing at least two nonionic surface-active compounds of differing chemical nature and one or more metal salts or complexes, whereas the second step comprises applying to the exoskeletons a solution B or dispersion which contains the natural dye(s), at least one nonionic surface-active compound, one or more nonionic and/or anionic surface-active agents, an alcohol and a fatty substance; one or more compounds, capable of being oxidative in the pH 3 to 7 range, are added to the first solution A whereas a compound carrying one or more ether functional groups and at least one alcohol functional group is incorporated into the dyeing solution or suspension B.
