The invention specifies a method for eliminating disturbances which are commonly contained in signals correlated with respect to one another. The method consists in determining the positive time cross correlation function, the negative time cross correlation function and the difference between these functions. A device for carrying out the method is described. The functions can be evaluated with the aid of a physical single-bit correlator even if the input signals are resolved in more than one bit. A signal processing system is used for updating smoothed estimated values of the difference at a rate which is equal to the sampling rate and in order to evaluate the mean value of the most probable time delay.
