In a process for controlling the degree of filling of a conveying device (4) conveying green pellets (1) through a hardening furnace, in order to obtain optimum automatic filling of a conveying device (4) with green pellets after the charging of the green pellets (1) onto the conveying device (4) and before introduction of the green pellets (1) into the hardening furnace, the level (19) of the green pellets (1) is measured by means of at least one ultrasonic probe (15) and the conveying rate of the conveying device (4) is adjusted in dependence on the measured level (19). <IMAGE>
