The present procedure is directed towards a continuous process for producing hydrocarbyl aldosides, e.g. alkyl aldosides, from carbohydrates and more particularly mixtures of alkyl glucosides from starch by direct alcoholysis. A carbohydrate, such as starch, is suspended in an alcohol and passed through a confined and heated zone, under pressure and other particular conditions, in the presence of an acid catalyst in order to form a mixture of alkyl aldosides. According to a preferred procedure, the converted carbohydrate/alcohol suspension is rapidly cooled after alcoholysis and before recovery of the alkyl aldoside(s). According to another preferred procedure, at least one alkyl aldoside is separated from the resultant mixture of alkyl aldosides and the resultant mother liquor is recycled to the carbohydrate/alcohol feed suspension.
|
