Method and plant (9) for detecting control parameters, respectively automatic control of a digging machine, to run in subterranean hollow unpracticable chambers, such as tunnels, water conduits and the like. This installation (9) is comprised essentially of devices for measuring the horizontal and vertical positions of the digging machine (1), a device for measuring the distance travelled and a computer to calculate the control data as well as to memorize and provide correction data. The order value of the tracing is introduced in the computer in the form of a description function. According to a prior installation of the digging machine in an initial excavation, the instantaneous tracing value is determined from obtained measuring data. By comparing instantaneous data with order data, the computer enables to automatically control the digging machine with the largest possible matching between the order tracing and the instantaneous tracing. The use of a gyroscopic system enables to avoid errors which may occur in known optical systems as to the determination of the horizontal position of the digging machine.
