A novel advantageous process for the preparation of xanthone and thioxanthone compounds by reacting o,o'-dialkoxybenzophenones, or o-alkoxy-o'-halobenzophenones, with a metal sulphide or, in alkaline medium, with sulphur. The resulting compounds and the alkoxybenzophenones are excellent photoinitiators.
