A method is indicated for roll cooling in a cold rolling mill, in which, to determine a coolant quantity distribution, it is possible to adjust the coolant quantity zone-by-zone along the roll axis. Automation of the emulsion distribution, previously input by hand via an illuminated keypad, is proposed such that the flow rate in each cooling zone i is controlled by a flow control circuit, the flow rate setpoint values Qi of which are corrected by means of an empirically determined relationship Qi = Qi (qF) where qF is the thermal power density in the roll, which density is calculated continuously on the basis of measurable process variables and roll setpoint values. A suitable calculation equation is given by qF = v . P . (1 + P/c . h)/r where v is the roll speed, P is the rolling force, h the pass reduction, r the work roll radius and c a constant. The relationship Qi = Qi (qF) can be determined in preliminary tests, in which the coolant distribution is adjusted as before by input via an illuminated keypad, the required measured values being recorded continuously during the preliminary tests. <IMAGE>
