In an ashtray device for motor vehicles, in particular passenger cars, a closable receptacle opening is arranged, instead of a customary ashtray, in the passenger compartment or driver's compartment. In order to increase the capacity while making the ashtray easy to empty, the receptacle opening is connected via a channel to an ash container which is large in volume and can be removed outside the passenger compartment or driver's compartment.
