A checking system for article protection comprises in a known manner a number of checking points and a central data collecting member 74 for verifying the individual checking points with the aid of a guard, a separate identifier being associated with each checking point. According to the invention, the checking point consists of a data carrier 28 with a code strip which is arranged in a protected manner and includes the identifier in digital form. The data collecting member 10 has a data reading head for serial reading as the data collecting member 10 is moved along a reading surface belonging to the data carrier 28. The data collecting member 28 also comprises a memory controlled by a microprocessor for storing the data read. <IMAGE>
