The abrasive band (6) is mounted on a first entraining roller (5) and on a second roller held on a support (8), and a device (12) tensions the band by changing the distance between the two rollers. The second roller support is mounted to oscillate about an axis parallel to the machine work surface and the generatrix of this roller furthest from the other roller is inclined w.r.t. the axis of the same by a chosen angle (alpha). A ramp (15) carried by the support or the second roller cooperates with one band edge internal face to assure its centring.
