The method provides an indirect run-through measurement of the entering thread (4), either on a feedwheel (6) or on the drive belt (10) of the latter. A variable proportional to the thread quantity running through can be picked up at the points 13a, b or c, as a result of which the thread (4) is not touched on its path from a yarn bobbin (5) to the knitting point (7). The measured variable can be related electronically to the number of revolutions of the rotor (1a) determined simultaneously by a master/slave pair (3), and the values of the thread quantity per revolution thus determined can either be displayed directly or be used for monitoring the machine. <IMAGE>
