The free end of a small drill (16), clamped in a collet chuck (10) and having a shank attachment, is supported against the grinding direction of a grinding wheel (34) by a supporting finger (14) which can be adjusted relative to the drill axis. Owing to the drill being supported, the risk of fracture, present when grinding against the drill, is virtually eliminated. In order to carry out a two-surface grinding operation, the drill (16) can, by pulling and rotating a changeover ring (26), be rotated through 180 DEG about its axis without the supporting finger (14) thereby being pulled back. In a pivoted position of the entire securing means (12), the adjustment of the drill (16) and the positioning of the supporting finger (14) on the drill can be effected precisely under a microscope (38). <IMAGE>
