摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To obtain a large-screen display consisting of many picture elements and a high-speed image display by impressing an electric field in two directions on a specific basis through an active matrix, and driving bistable ferroelectric liquid-crystal into two light and dark states. CONSTITUTION:Scanning electrode groups 6 of the active matrix consisting of FETs which drive the bistable liquid-crystal are selected periodically in sequence, and an electric signal supplied to a selected scanning electrode GN is +VG in a phase t1 and ''0'' in a phase t2. Signals to other scanning electrodes GN+1 and GN+2 are ''0'' in t1 and -VG in t2. Electric signals supplied to display electrodes CN, CN+1, and CN+2 in the phase t1 are +VC, signals supplied to electrodes CN and CN+2 in the phase t2 are -VC, and an electric signal supplied to an unselected electrode CN+1 in the phase t2 is ''0''. In this case, VG and VC are set properly to refresh the picture element at the intersection of a scanning line 6 and a display line 7 selected in the phase t1 into the light state, and the picture element has transition to the dark state in the phase t2 and is driven into the two light and dark states similarly after a phase t3.</p>
