The sound signal at all times has a frequency spectrum, the envelope of which presents a certain number of peaks. The interval of frequencies is divided corresponding to the spectrum of the speech into n frequency bands. The width and the central frequency of the main bands are determined with a view to retaining the values in which evolve with the greatest probability the formative parts of speech for the language under consideration. On each occasion, a selection is made of the k formant bands (k is less than n) in which the peaks evolve. Also on each occasion k command signals are formed, the amplitude of which is proportional to the energy of the peaks or of the band. K electrical coding signals are modulated each time in terms of the k command signals, and with the aid of at least one of the parameters frequency and amplitude.
