In applying liquid to a substrate by nip pressure between rollers, a controlled quantity of liquid is introduced by the lower roller, part of which is immersed in a bath. An excess of liquid is removed by cutting the film of liq. formed on the lower roller, using a scraping device in the form of a tensioned wire. The prod. used as a conditioner and softening agent during high temperature drying, as in a domestic drier. The absorbent substrate takes the form of a heat-activated sheet of foam, felt or non-woven fabric which may discharge chemical agents, such as softeners or perfumes into the material being dried.
