A barking machine of the drum type is provided in which a receiving container is open in its bottom part. A drum-like rotary member with a number of barking teeth attached to it is arranged in such a way that it partly enters the base opening of the receiving container. The rotary member is rotated in such a way that the tree trunks loaded into the receiving container are lifted while being rotated for barking.
