According to the invention, a device for closing vibration dampers, gas-filled springs or similar piston-cylinder units, which results in a high prestress between a cylinder arranged in a container when the unit is closed by flanging or partial pressing in of the container end or by roller seam welding, is obtained by virtue of the fact that, during the closing operation the container is held fixed axially in the upper cylindrical region of the container by a fixing device. As a result, the portion of the container below the fixing region is subjected to tension by the pressure exerted on the cylinder via the piston-rod guide. The cylinder itself is subjected to compression, with the result that the axial force applied is more or less retained as a prestressing force after closure.
