From the point of view of physical parameters, ultrasonic testing is one of the methods that can be applied in the widest areas of non-destructive material testing. Manual ultrasonic testing of workpieces is, however, severely limited due to a range of factors. First and foremost, these are: - the conditions of propagation of ultrasound, - the reflection conditions of the sound ray at the flaws, - the coupling conditions of the sound generator or sound receiver, - the indirect display of the echo pulses, and - the high psychic and physical burden on the test personnel. All these conditions reduce the usefulness, but in particular the reliability of the manual methods. The present invention is intended largely to eliminate these restrictions by a simple and reliable positive guidance of the test head, as well as to ease the coupling and keep it constant. The guidance, and thus also the positioning, of the test head can be carried out exactly by means of the coupling and guiding foil in such a way that it is also possible to evaluate the echo pulse displays statistically using simple means.
