Just like a front-operated lathe, a lathe has a bed (1) which slopes obliquely forwards. An auxiliary guideway (12) runs horizontally relative to the sloping bed (1) and forms the upper edge of this bed (1). The headstock (4) and the tailstock (6) of the lathe are arranged on the auxiliary guideway (12). Slotted plates (14) form a bulkhead between the auxiliary guideway (12), together with the headstock (4), and the working space (15) of the lathe. <IMAGE>
