The invention relates to an apparatus for mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The resuscitation apparatus comprises a housing which is fastened on the chest of a patient when it is used, the housing and a safety device guaranteeing non-elastic encirclement of the chest of the patient. A pneumatically operated pressure device which rests against the breastbone of the patient projects from the housing, a suitable valve means for effecting a cyclic movement of the pressure device being provided in the housing. <IMAGE>
