In an upper ridge beam-sliding roof for motor vehicles whose rigid cover closes a roof cut-out in the roof of the vehicle and is supported at the front end on sliding shoes which are displaceable in guide rails laid along the roof cut-out so as to be swivellable about an axis running transversely with respect to the direction of travel, and is supported at the rear end on the vehicle roof so as to be vertically adjustable via extension elements and whose sliding roof cover can be raised out of its closed position lying in the plane of the roof initially into a maximum extension position and subsequently swivelled gradually into a lowered travel position before the start or during the sliding back over the fixed part of the vehicle roof, in order to reduce the required installation height and to reduce the outlay in terms of manufacture and assembly for the extension elements it is proposed that the extension elements are formed by swivel levers which are coupled to the vehicle roof so as to be swivellable about a fixed axis directed transversely with respect to the direction of travel and can be driven by means of pressure-resistant threaded cables using step-down gearing, and that the swivel levers have a kink which permits a travel position of the sliding roof cover in the open position lying just above the plane of the fixed part of the vehicle roof. <IMAGE>
