Methyl acetate is produced by esterifying methanol with acetic acid in the presence of an esterification catalyst and distilling from the product containing also an entrainer in a distillation column methyl acetate as an overhead fraction, there being removed from the column a liquid sidestream fraction comprising entrainer and water. The sidestream fraction is preferably separated into an aqueous phase and an organic phase which is recycled to the column. The methyl acetate product is suitable as a carbonylation feedstock for producing acetic anhydride and/or acetic acid. |
