The process of the invention for preparing a N-(2-substituted aminoethyl)amide of the formula: <IMAGE> I comprises contacting one or more compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> II with an amine of the formula: <IMAGE> III wherein A is nitrogen or a quaternary nitrogen of the formula: <IMAGE> IV wherein B is <IMAGE> when A is nitrogen and B is <IMAGE> when A is IV; wherein X(-) is a counterion; b is zero or one; and R1-R9 are as defined in the specification. In a preferred embodiment, the process is catalyzed by a Lewis acid or a protonic acid with a non-nucleophilic counterion. |
