Compounds of the general formula I: <CHEM> and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts and in-vivo hydrolysable esters, in which each of R<1> and R<2>, which may be the same or different, denotes a hydrogen atom, an aryl group, or a heterocyclyl group; X denotes a hydrogen atom, or a hydroxy, substituted hydroxy, mercapto, substituted mercapto, azido, cyano, halo, nitro, isothiocyanato, amino, substituted amino, aryl, or heterocyclyl group, or the residue of a carbon nucleophile; and n denotes 0, 1 or 2. are novel compounds with beta -lactamase inhibitory and antibacterial properties.
