Non-woven articles comprised of thermotropic liquid crystal polymer fibers and method of production thereof.

Non-woven articles comprised of thermotropic liquid polymer fibres made of fibres of a polymer which is capable of forming an anisotropic melt phase, said fibres being bonded together either autogeneously or by means of an adhesive composition. The polymer is a wholly aromatic polymer, preferably a wholly aromatic polyester. A method for forming these non-woven articles comprises spray-spinning said polymer in the melt phase and collecting the multitude of discontinuous fibres in web form on a screen. Such non-woven articles exhibit good thermal stability and chemical and solvent resistance. A heat treatment in a non-oxidizing, moisture-free atmosphere can be effected to increase the melting temperature of the non-woven articles.
