Dome-forming slide filler for casting ladles which are used to hold molten steel and which have an outlet sleeve disposed in the ladle bottom and an adjustable slide closure plate. The slide filler basically comprises chromium ore sand, quartz sand and a fine granular auxiliary material contributing to the dome formation. The proportion of auxiliary material is considerably smaller than the chromium ore proportion and the quartz sand proportion. Iron oxide (Fe2O3) is used as auxiliary material in an amount of 0.03-0.2% by weight. Apart from that, the mixture comprises chromium ore sand in an amount of 50-70% by weight, the remainder being quartz sand.
