The invention relates to a method for measuring the activity of an element in a metal melt, in which method the oxygen activity is preferably determined by using a cell containing zirconium oxide. As soon as the cell (1) after immersion into the metal melt becomes conductive, the voltmeter (2) closes the microswitch (15) so that a timing relay (13) is switched on which, during a period of from 0.5 to 4 seconds actuates a changeover switch; during this time, a DC pulse having an intensity of from 0.5 to 4 A is applied to the measuring cell (1) via a DC source (12). As a result, the annoying effect caused by the probe together with the cell (1) being immersed in the metal melt can be eliminated or be eliminated more rapidly. <IMAGE>
