Catalytic heat exchanger

A catalytic heat exchanger for the exhaust emission control of internal combustion engines is described, which is constructed in the form of a cross-flow heat exchanger. The exhaust gases to be purified are lead through a group of flow passages coated with a catalyst, whilst the fluid cooling medium is lead through a second group of flow passages running transversely to the first group. The separate groups of passages are arranged in alternating layers in the heat exchanger. The flow passages for the fluid heat exchange medium (air) may be provided with electrical heating elements. The short heat transmission or dissipation distances which can be achieved are especially advantageous.
