A plurality of lamp devices, of which one lamp device is allocated to each shelf location, containing a specific type of article, of the article storage shelf, are situated connected in parallel in a common line and receive a lamp current via the latter. Different electrical signals generated by a controllable electrical signal generator connected to the line, of which each signal is assigned to a predetermined type of article and thus to a predetermined lamp device, are sent sequentially by the signal generator via the line to all the connected lamp devices in the sequence of the article sorting to be undertaken. Each lamp device contains an electrical recognition circuit which is tuned to the signal assigned to the lamp device, and distinguishes this signal from the signals assigned to the other lamp devices. Furthermore, each lamp device contains an electric switch which is controlled by the recognition circuit and which, as soon as the signal assigned to a specific lamp device is emitted into the line by the signal generator and recognised by the relevant lamp device, releases the flow of current through the lamp device and causes the lamp device to indicate its shelf location optically and the article which is to be sorted therefrom to be lit up, and ...
