The device has a humidity sensor made of porous material in which at least one measurable characteristic is changed as a function of humidity. The device covered by the invention is characterized by the fact that it contains a narrow band infrared radiation source (1) which irradiates the humidity sensor (3) from a prescribed distance (S). In this way it is possible to eliminate almost entirely the hysteresis and drift phenomena of known sensors.
