The subject of the invention is an apparatus for wrapping coating material around cardboard sheets or similar flat workpieces, using corner retraction elements which are each arranged at the sides of the cardboard sheets and are driven to rotate, during which their pressure surface rolls on the laterally projecting surfaces of the wrapped coating material during the continuous transportation of the cardboard sheets which are resting and retained on a supporting table, the corner retraction elements for the front wrapping being capable of being driven more slowly, and the corner retraction elements for the rear wrapping more quickly relative to the movement of the transportation of the cardboard sheets. The invention is characterised in that the corner retraction elements are designed as arcuate segments (5 and 6) with a pressure surface (5a and 6a) which describes a circular cone, in that the supporting table is designed, in the region underneath the corner retraction elements, as a counter-pressure surface (14) correspondingly adapted to the pressure surface (5a and 6a) of the arcuate segments (5 and 6), in that the arcuate segments (5 and 6) possess a front edge which extends obliquely outwards in their direction of movement, and in that depressors (5c and 6c) are mounted upstream of the arcuate segments (5 and 6) and act on the outer region of the coating material projecting beyond the sides of the cardboard sheet.
